Sag Harbor Liquor Store is a family business living in the heart of beautiful Sag Harbor, NY. Co-owners Bob and Barbara Schmitz gave birth to this venture in 1975, a time when the village was in financial trouble. At the onset for the Schmitz’s, business in the village wasn’t too good. Storefronts were boarded up with plywood, schools were insolvent and the primary employment hub in town, the Bulova Watchcase Factory, was closing its doors. For a young couple with a young child in a deteriorating business district, purchasing a retail business took enormous courage. If you were to ask Bob and Barbara today if they think they made a good decision they would probably laugh and say that they would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Presently, Sag Harbor has become a port of call for many tourists, large yachts, and smaller sea crafts from abroad. Year after year, the store continues to serve customers from the village, throughout the hamptons, and around the world. The Sag Harbor Liquor Store is a true family run entity from Mom and Pop down to the youngest in the family. Bill, the eldest of the five, now owns and operates his own retail liquor store in neighboring Shelter Island. Robert Jr., and Hilary co-manage in Sag Harbor while Heidi works for a wine distributing company. Hayley, the youngest of the Schmitz’s is involved in wine and liquor sales at the restaurant end of the industry and spends many hours on location at the store, as well.
